Give Adoption a Chance

Adopting a pet from a local animal shelter or rescue organization like K9 Friends is a most fulfilling experience. It is one of those stand-still moments that remains etched in your memory forever. That pleading get-me-out-of-here face you can't resist. And the feel-good emotions you wear out the door – after all, you just saved a life.

Let's face it, animal shelters aren't the most upbeat places in the world. When you leave, you wish you could take more animals with you.

Adopting a pet is most often consummated on emotion. Love at first sight. Your heart is ahead of your head, recognizing that shelter animals' time clocks tick for only a short time.

Pluto is healing nicely after his lump-ectomy. The lump is gone and now replaced by stitches down the middle of his cranium. Poor chap. My girls aren't too pleased with his presence, but I have a feeling they know it's temporary because of the funny "I'm wounded, leave me alone" cap I've made for Pluto. Hopefully, his hair will grow back quickly and he'll be ready for a new home when I return him to K9.

Starbuck

One of our volunteers, Eve, called today with a status update on Starbuck. Starbuck came to K9 serveral months ago, very pregnant and uncomfortable. She had her nine puppies in our care (which we named after the Planets) and was recently sent to the vet to be spayed.

Apparently, the vet had complications during the procedure and was unable to remove Starbuck's ovaries. Therefore, she is technically fixed and unable to have puppies, but she will still go into heat. The vet graciously reduced the fee by 50 Dhs. I had to chuckle to myself to think that only a male vet would think that not eliminating a woman's monthly visitor would only be worth 50 Dhs.

PERCY is an adorable Saluki cross puppy currently living in the K9 bathroom (have we mentioned we're up to our ears with puppies?). He is lively, playful, and boisterous. Saluki dogs are known for needing lots of attention and exercise so this pup would make a great companion for an energetic child!

I have a personal interest in Houston who was named after my home city in Texas when I first began volunteering at K9 Friends. Houston has been in the kennels for as long as I've been a volunteer (nine months) and I think it's about time he found a friendly home! He's a handsome dog looking for the right family to love.

Wallace the current "office dog" is a very playful and sweet boy. He is house trained and would be a great addition to any family. All he wants are hugs and bones to chew.
